Crypto Saturday: ETH Is Losing the Vote

I checked the screens around noon Saturday — the way I always do — and the first thing that jumped out was not BTC. BTC was doing what BTC has been doing for three weeks: a slow, controlled bleed in a narrowing range. The thing that surprised me was ETH. Or, more precisely, ETH priced in BTC.

BTC closed the week at $73,900, down 4.8% — sitting right on the 30-day low of $72,931. ETH closed at $2,025, down 4.8% in dollar terms but down 10.6% on the month. The dollar pain is bad. The relative pain is worse.

When BTC sits on a 30-day low and ETH/BTC keeps bleeding, the equity proxies usually move first on Monday. The flow that gets printed in the next 48 hours decides whether this is a base or a breakdown.

ETH/BTC: The Quiet Vote Inside Crypto

The ratio dropped to 0.0274 on Friday. That is a fresh six-month low and the chart is one continuous staircase lower since February.

Read it as a vote. When the crypto market is risk-on, capital rotates from BTC into ETH and then into mid-cap alts. When it is risk-off, the rotation reverses — ETH gets sold relative to BTC, and BTC itself becomes the safe-haven inside the asset class. We are clearly in the second mode. The flow into spot BTC ETFs has slowed to a trickle, ETH ETFs are seeing daily outflows, and on-chain, the ETH leverage that built up in early May has been unwound.

The funding tape says the same thing. BTC perpetual funding at OKX printed 0.0027% this morning — basically flat — with a seven-day average of 0.005%. That is a neutral-to-cold tape. The leverage that drove the late-April push to $81K is gone. What is left is spot, and spot is not showing up at $74K yet.

The Equity Proxies Are Still the Tell

On the equity side, the bleed continued into the new month. MSTR fell 3.5% on the week to $159. COIN dropped 2.3% to $189. IBIT was the worst of the group at -5.4%. The interesting outlier was MARA, up 6.1% — the miners caught a bid late in the week on the back of stable hashrate economics and rising network fees, even as the BTC price chopped lower.

That MARA/MSTR split is the most actionable thing on the screen right now. When the treasury-proxy trade (MSTR) breaks down but the operating-business proxy (MARA) catches a bid, the market is telling you it wants to own the cash-flowing version of the trade and not the leveraged-balance-sheet version. That has not been the dominant tape for two years.

Deep Dive: What ETH Has to Prove

ETH is the deep dive this week because the chart and the narrative are both at an inflection. To stop the bleeding, ETH does not need to rally — it needs to stop underperforming BTC. Three things to watch:

  • 0.026 ETH/BTC: the next major shelf. A weekly close below opens the door to 0.024 — the late-2024 lows.
  • ETH ETF flows: four straight weeks of outflows. A single green print would matter.
  • L2 fees: if base-layer ETH fees stay near zero while L2 activity grows, the burn narrative weakens further. That is the slow grind nobody is pricing.

You can see the live ratio and the equity proxies side-by-side on the Alpha Dashboard — it is the cleanest way to track how the relative trades are repricing through the weekend.

What to Watch into Sunday

  • BTC $72,500: the line. A weekend break and Monday opens ugly.
  • ETH/BTC 0.0265: any bounce here keeps the structure intact.
  • MSTR $155: a 30-day shelf. Break and the proxy trade is officially in trouble.
  • Funding rates: any flip negative on BTC perps means leverage is starting to short — usually a contrarian setup near range lows.

Quiet week on the BTC dollar chart. Loud week if you knew where to look. The vote inside crypto has shifted, and the equity tape is the place it will show up first.

P.S.   The MARA-over-MSTR split was the first crack in the proxy trade — and the options tape saw it Wednesday. AlphaX Options tracks these rotations in real time. The next one is already setting up.
