UOA Weekly: AMD Eats the AI Trade

I was on a call Wednesday with a buddy who runs a small options book out of Tampa. He was venting about getting chopped up in NVDA — long calls, short puts, you know the playbook everyone has been running for two years. Then he stopped mid-sentence and said, “Wait, why is my AMD position the only thing working?” That call is basically this week in one line.

The S&P pushed to a fresh all-time high near 7,591, the Nasdaq 100 added 3.5%, and the VIX leaked all the way down to 15.74 — the lowest close in 90 days. On paper, it looks like a quiet melt-up. Under the hood, the AI trade was getting rewired.

AMD ripped 14.4% on the week. NVDA dropped 1.2%. That gap did not happen all at once.

Flow Alert · AlphaX Options

The rotation out of NVDA into AMD did not start on the screens — it started in the options tape two weeks ago. The whales were already there. The question is what they are repositioning into next.

AMD vs NVDA: The Tape Already Voted

On Tuesday, AMD closed up 23 points on the day while NVDA was flat — a 23-point spread. Wednesday, another 23-point gap. Thursday, 20 points. Three of the last five sessions saw AMD beat NVDA by more than 20 percentage points on a single-day basis. The market is voting on who wins the next AI build cycle, and it is not picking the consensus name.

The flow tells the same story. Heavy weekly call buying in AMD $500-strike weeklies on Monday and Tuesday. NVDA saw the opposite — put roll-downs and call selling near $220. When you see that kind of two-way separation in two stocks that usually move together, it is rarely random.

MSFT also caught a bid (+6.1%) and META added 3.4%. The hyperscaler customers of these chips are the ones quietly outperforming, which lines up with the AMD narrative: capacity is the bottleneck and AMD is the relief valve.

VIX Compressed, But Not for Free

The volatility complex has been giving the green light to risk. VIX closed Thursday at 15.74, the lowest in 90 days, with the monthly average at 17.38.

Cheap vol is fine when nothing breaks. The flow I saw late in the week says some real money is starting to nibble on June and July SPX puts as a hedge — not panic, more like insurance shopping while it is on sale. You can usually track this kind of positioning live on the Alpha Dashboard if you want to see how skew is shifting.

Crypto Proxies Keep Bleeding

The other side of the screen looked uglier. MSTR fell 4.2%, COIN dropped 2.7%, and the broader crypto-equity sleeve continues to bleed even as AI hardware names rip. The BTC tape itself has stayed in the same range, but the proxy stocks are no longer paid for the same beta. That divergence has been widening for three weeks and the options flow has not yet flipped bullish on either.

Oil Cracks Again

WTI lost 9.3% on the week, the second consecutive double-digit weekly drop. The Hormuz scare from a month ago has fully bled out of the tape, and energy names felt it. Gold (+1.1%) and long bonds (TLT +2.0%) caught the rotation money instead — classic late-cycle defensive bid, even as the index makes new highs. That mix is worth watching.

What I’m Watching Next Week

  • AMD $520-$525: round-number psychology, watch for monthly call exposure rolling up.
  • NVDA $215: the line that has held twice. A break opens $205.
  • VIX 15: if it cracks 15, expect skew to repriceeven if the index keeps grinding.
  • Crude $85: support shelf from late winter. A close below changes the inflation story.
  • MSTR $150: long-dated put OI building. The crypto-equity proxy trade is on watch.

The week’s headline was new highs. The week’s real story was a quiet handoff inside the AI trade — one ticker handing the torch to another, with the broader index just along for the ride.

P.S. The AMD-over-NVDA flow showed up in the options tape ten sessions before the price did. That is exactly the kind of footprint AlphaX Options is built to surface. The next rotation is already being printed somewhere this weekend.
