After a stellar earnings report, Microsoft (MSFT) ripped higher β grabbing the spotlight on Wall Street and igniting a flurry of bullish options activity.
Traders poured into calls, betting big that the tech titanβs rally is just beginning.
But before you follow the crowd and dive headfirst into this hype-driven breakoutβ¦ thereβs a technical trap lurking beneath the surface.
Despite the earnings euphoria, Microsoft is still tangled in a long-term downtrend β and the chart tells a story thatβs more sobering than exciting.

Wall Street Loves a Good Earnings Pop
Letβs start with what got everyone excited. Microsoftβs latest quarterly earnings came in strong. The company crushed expectations across its core businesses β from cloud growth in Azure to solid gains in Office 365 and AI-fueled enterprise solutions. The results were enough to send the stock up over 2% on the day, closing at $435.28, after trading as high as $439.44 during the session.
ο»ΏOptions traders werenβt shy about expressing their enthusiasm. The real-time options flow lit up like a Christmas tree. One massive trade saw 8,000 August 2025 $450 calls go through at a hefty $20.10 premium β a $16.1 million wager on MSFT pushing higher over the next few months. That was just the beginning.

Hereβs a quick snapshot of the action:
- $16.1M in call premium on 08/15/25 $450 calls
- Additional $4M on the same strike, different trade
- Smaller blocks targeting the $480 strike for December 2025
- Sweeps piling into near-term $440 and $442.50 calls expiring this week
Clearly, institutional players are putting serious capital behind a bullish move. The sentiment is loud and clear β Wall Street is betting Microsoft keeps running.
But the Chart Says: Not So Fast
Now for the other side of the coin. Despite the earnings momentum and options frenzy, MSFT is still confined to a technical pattern that demands caution: a downward sloping channel stretching back to its late-2023 highs.
Take a look at the chart:

This latest move higher brought MSFT right back to the upper edge of that descending channel β a resistance line that has rejected prices several times before. Yes, the stock briefly broke above that resistance in today’s session, but the move isnβt decisive enough to call a confirmed breakout just yet. One or two bullish candles don’t negate months of lower highs and lower lows.
Even if the price inches higher in the coming sessions, itβs likely to stall again β or worse, reverse sharply if the post-earnings momentum fades. Weβve seen it before: earnings pops that get faded within days, especially when they run into entrenched downtrends.
The key point here is this: the broader trend remains lower, and thatβs what you want to respect.
The Trend Is Your Friend β Especially When Itβs Down
The options flow may look bullish, but itβs also short-term and speculative. The bulk of the volume is in call contracts expiring in the next few weeks to a few months. Thatβs not conviction β thatβs momentum chasing.
Professional traders know this game. They leverage earnings catalysts, buy calls on the rumor (or the reaction), and look to flip those contracts into strength. Itβs not about long-term belief in Microsoft β itβs about exploiting short-term volatility.
And right now, that volatility is pushing right into a technical ceiling.
Unless we see MSFT break out of this channel with real volume and follow-through β and then hold above it β itβs still operating inside a bearish framework. A failed breakout here would only reinforce the existing trend and trap the late bulls.
For now, stay away from MSFT.
Let the dust settle. The chart is your compass β and itβs still pointing south.
Trade smart,
