Today is about the hedge funds bearish sentiment in one chart.
And it can be taken two ways.
One is extremely bullish, while the other, and happens to be my preference, is not so pretty.
And it all hinges on a popular investor segment that is worth watching – hedge funds.
What we see is a seismic shift from the peak confidence of yesteryears to a hedge-fund consensus that’s bracing for impact.
The chart shows a steady decline from the dizzying heights of 2023 back to levels last seen in the pre-pandemic era.

This isn’t just about numbers dwindling; it’s a story of hedge funds, the market’s seasoned soothsayers, girding their loins for rougher seas.
They’ve always had their ears to the ground, and if the ground’s murmuring “bear,” we best pay attention.

From Peak to Trough: The Unspoken Warnings
At its zenith, the prime book’s share of overall U.S. net exposure was a towering testament to bullish bets and economic euphoria.
Fast forward to today, and we’re witnessing a retreat so steep it can’t help but raise eyebrows and hairs on the back of necks alike.
Hedge funds are the financial world’s vanguards, often a step ahead of the curve. Their current positioning is a far cry from the optimism that marked the rally’s peak.
They’re trimming the sails, so to speak, reducing exposure and seeking shelter.
Hedge Funds Bearish Sentiment
The bear market isn’t just a metaphor โ it’s a reality that’s starting to bite. The hedge funds’ cautious stance is a clarion call to investors who might still be basking in the afterglow of previous gains.
Now, let’s take the bullish side for a minute.
It can be viewed as investors that are not in this recent run up. With that amount of cash seemingly on the sidelines, if it suddenly pushes into the market, that alone will drive up share prices.
We didn’t see that occur in 2020 until the initial crash took place.
Where Do I Stand?
I think you already know that.
I’m still bearish on this market.
As long as the Fed is keeping rates elevated, this market is set for a dip.
This isn’t just about hedge funds hedging bets.
It’s about the broader implications for the market and your portfolio. It’s a sign that it might be time to re-evaluate positions, to consider that the tide could be turning and to prepare accordingly.
Hedge funds are charting a course through choppy waters, and if history has taught us anything, it’s that their navigational skills are not to be underestimated. They’re not infallible, but they’re not to be ignored either.
Let’s get it!
