Kraken, the Fed, and Bitcoin’s Wild Week
A crypto exchange just got the keys to the Federal Reserve’s payment system. Let that sink in.
On Tuesday, Kraken Financial became the first crypto firm in history to receive a Federal Reserve master account. The Kansas City Fed granted the Wyoming-chartered exchange direct access to Fedwire — the same settlement rails used by JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs. While Bitcoin was spiking to $74,100 on the Iran resolution rally, something arguably bigger was happening beneath the surface.
And that’s just the start of a week where crypto equities got hammered, ETF flows flipped positive for the first time in five weeks, and miners started pivoting to AI. Let’s unpack it.
Bitcoin: $74K spike, $68K reality
The week’s price action was a roller coaster with a clear narrative arc. Bitcoin opened Sunday near $65,770, surged on Monday’s ETF inflow wave ($521M in a single day), and then exploded to $74,100 on Tuesday as the Iran geopolitical resolution triggered a broad risk-on squeeze.

But the high didn’t hold. By Friday, BTC had faded back to ~$68,100, and Saturday sits around $68,000. The week still closed +3.4% — solid — but the rejection at $74K is the level to watch.
Key levels
- $74,100 — week high, short-squeeze ceiling. Needs to reclaim for bulls.
- $70,000–$71,500 — prior consolidation zone, now resistance.
- $65,000–$65,800 — tested multiple times. Holding so far.
- $62,534 — hard floor (Feb 24 low). If this breaks, watch $60K.
The big story: Kraken gets Fed access
Let’s be clear about what this means — and what it doesn’t. Kraken’s “skinny” master account lets it settle USD directly on Fedwire without needing a correspondent bank. It’s not a full banking license. Kraken can’t lend, can’t create money. But it can now process institutional-grade fiat settlement on sovereign rails.
Why does that matter? Three reasons:
- Blueprint for others. Custodia Bank was denied this exact access in 2023. Kraken’s approval signals a policy shift under the current administration. Other crypto firms — especially those with Wyoming SPDI charters — now have a playbook.
- Institutional plumbing. Direct Fedwire access removes the biggest friction point for large crypto trades: fiat settlement speed. This matters for funds, market makers, and prime brokers.
- Clarity Act leverage. The approval gives crypto advocates ammunition in the stalled Clarity Act negotiations, where banks have been blocking crypto yield product provisions.
Crypto equities: pain and positioning
While Bitcoin held up reasonably well this week, crypto equities got crushed on Friday:
- $MARA — down 8.7% Friday, trading ~$12.50
- $RIOT — down 9.2%, the worst of the miners
- $COIN — down 4.1%, at ~$194
- $MSTR — down 4.5%, bearish trend score of -100 on the Alpha Dashboard
The miner selloff has a fundamental driver: MARA, RIOT, and CLSK are all liquidating Bitcoin reserves to fund AI infrastructure pivots. That’s not necessarily bearish for BTC long-term — but it adds near-term supply pressure and tells you where management sees better marginal returns.
Options-wise, BITO volume ran 60% above its 30-day average this week, and MSTR put open interest is elevated. The flow is hedging, not chasing.
ETF flows: the real signal
Perhaps the most important development this week was the decisive end of the 5-week ETF outflow streak. Spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in roughly $1.4B in net inflows across Monday through Wednesday, led by BlackRock’s IBIT every single day.
That matters because the prior outflow cycle drained nearly $4 billion from these products. The flip suggests institutional allocators are re-entering, not just retail dip-buying. Watch next week’s flow data closely — if inflows sustain, the $74K level gets another shot.
Bottom line
Bitcoin’s week told two stories: the headline spike to $74K (exciting, but faded) and the structural shift underneath (Kraken’s Fed access + ETF inflow reversal). The second story matters more. If you’re watching crypto heading into next week, the levels are $70K resistance and $65K support. The trend in institutional flow — not spot price — will decide which one breaks first.
